What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was used as insulation in buildings built in the 1950's (source: epa.gov). It was first advertised as a miracle product that would revolutionize the insulation industry. Reseach has shown that when it first appeared in the 1920's, the manufacturers hid knowldedge that asbestos can flake off and get trapped in the lining of the lungs, causing scarring, and many times asbestos related diseases and cancers. The sad truth is that the people that discovered this were the firefighters that dealth with it in burning buildins and naval veterans where asbestos was used as a lining in the ships and very prone to flaking.

Where does asbestos exposure come from?
Asbestos exposure can come from a variety of trades. Almosts any type of construction worker had a chance of being exposed to asbestos at one time or another, many not even knowing they had been exposed. Another highly exposed career is naval veterans. Asbestos was used as a lining in the ships with nothing covering it, and would flake off and be inhaled very easily by anyone aboard. It was used by plumbers and found in common household appliances such as hairdrypers as late as 1980 (www.mesothelima-adviser.com/asbestos-exposure.html). Asbestos used to be used in many household products and many were exposed from simply working around the house.

How can Asbestos harm you?
Asbestos is dangerous when the very thin fibers become separated and are inhaled (positivehands.co.uk). These fibers, which are unable to be breathed out, get caught in the lining of the lungs and cause irreparable scarring. This scarring can, in many cases, be fatal by itself, but can also cause several types of cancers, several being malignant, such as mesothelioma. The number of deaths from asbestos related diseases has skyrocked since the beginning of the 21st century.
